Finding fresh local fruit in downtown Toronto just got a little easier.
We are excited to announce that The Farm Lot has returned for a second year at its King Street West location with partners TAS, Fresh City, and the Detox Market. Joining the team this year is Berryfresh Fruit Co., who have set up shop on the property to sell a selection of beautiful fruits and berries sources from Ontario family farms.
The Farm lot began as a joint initiative between TAS and Fresh City in the spring of 2013 with the intention to animate TAS’ property at 369 King St West into a vibrant urban farming oasis. With the support of The Detox Market next door, the team at Fresh City installed raised beds and grew a variety of leafy greens throughout the summer.
The idea for the Farm Lot first arose when Fresh City founder Ran Goel met with TAS president and CEO Mazyar Mortazavi at the Green Living Show a couple of years back. Both men agreed that TAS’ site would make a great spot for an urban garden, creating awareness about the potential for city grown food.
Now into it’s second year, the Farm Lot has maintained its focus on urban farming, while also increasing the accessibility of freshly picked, Ontario-grown fruits and berries. Berryfresh’s rustic wooden market stand offers the downtown crowd fresh fruit seven days a week.
In short, the Farm Lot is thriving and making productive use of a previously under-utilized space in the downtown core. It will remain open as long as weather allows. Next time you’re on King West, drop by and enjoy this unique green space.
To officially launch the Farm Lot’s 2014 season, join us for the Farm Lot Summer Market Party on Tuesday July 15th, from 6-9pm. The space will be filled with local makers selling delicious products, and Indie Alehouse will be serving up their refreshing local brews. Join us for this FREE event!
