Last year TAS became the first Canadian real estate developer to achieve B Corporation status. It is an accomplishment for which we are immensely proud. Today, B Corp has released their 3rd annual “Best FOR the World” list, and TAS is placed among this group of companies who are creating positive social and environmental impacts through the work that they do.
The “Best FOR the World” list honours businesses from around the world that earned an overall score in the top 10% of all certified B Corporations on the “B Impact Assessment”. Globally, only 92 B Corps, (including 12 Canadian companies) have earned this designation in 2014, yet the positive social impact of these businesses is disproportionate to the size of the group.
“Highlighted companies [on the list] include CDI Lan, a Brazilian education and training company generating income and employability in low income communities through internet cafes, d.light design, a manufacturer and distributor of solar lighting and power products providing access to reliable, affordable, renewable energy for nearly 30 million people in 60 countries, and Sunrise Banks, a Minnesota community bank supporting affordable housing, small business development, and not-for-profits.” – B Lab Media Release
The idea behind B Corp is simple: companies using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. B Corporations are companies that have undergone a rigorous assessment of their social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency, and have been certified by the independent 3rd party, “B Lab”.
For TAS, the importance of being a certified B Corp is that the assessment process provides us with a measurement of how we are doing with respect to the social and environmental aspects of our work. As we continuously strive to improve our impact assessment score over time, this measurement tool helps to ensure we are making changes in the right direction.
Today, the TAS team will give each other a pat on the back for this accomplishment, but this announcement only furthers our excitement to continue to be a different kind of developer.
